The Pros and Cons of Oil Heat vs Heat Pump Systems

January 4, 2023 by Kai Haskins

As a homeowner in Massachusetts, you know that heating your home during the winter can be expensive. With record high prices for oil heat, it’s important to consider alternative options for keeping your home warm and comfortable. This year has seen an especially steep increase in heating oil costs across the state, with prices hitting an all-time high of $5.90 / gallon in December. And experts predict that costs will only continue to rise over the next several years. That’s why switching to a mini-split heat pump system now could save you thousands on energy bills in just a few short years.

Oil heating systems can also be detrimental to the environment since burning oil emits pollutants such as nitrogen oxide that can further contribute to global climate change and localized air quality issues. Furthermore, there is risk from oil storage tanks which can corrode over time or burst under pressure, leading to costly damage and potential health hazards such as fires or explosions. Thus, while oil may be a viable choice in some circumstances due to its lower initial cost, its drawbacks should not be overlooked before making a decision on how to heat your home.

Mini-split heat pumps offer many benefits over traditional heating solutions like oil furnaces or electric baseboard heaters. For one thing, they are more energy efficient than nearly every other option on the market. That means lower energy bills and a more comfortable home for you! Plus they can deliver both heating and cooling functions so no matter what season it is, you’ll always be comfortable indoors. Heat pumps do operate on electricity, but boast efficiency that is approximately 4 times better than traditional electric resistance heating systems.

Another great advantage of mini-split systems is their versatility in installation: You can have them installed centrally as part of your existing HVAC system or opt for a ductless setup (which also provides even greater efficiency). Whichever option works best for your home, mini-splits provide reliable comfort all year round without breaking the bank.

While electricity has increased in price recently as well, heat pumps function extremely efficiently, so it is still considerably more cost effective than oil. Additionally, homeowners looking to take their utilities entirely into their own hands have the option to power their heat pumps with solar. Modern heat pumps can also function down to -15 degrees fahrenheit, and are widely considered a reliable option for primary heat in the northeast.

With all these benefits combined plus rebates available through Mass Save® up to $10,000, it’s easy to see why so many people are making the switch from expensive gas & oil systems over to mini-split heat pumps. Especially given current projections that suggest heating oil prices will continue rising steadily throughout 2023 and beyond! So if you’re looking for a reliable and affordable solution this winter season then consider investing in a quality mini split system today – your wallet will thank you later!

Electric Resistance Heat vs. Mini-Split Heat Pump Systems

January 4, 2023 by Kai Haskins

For those looking to stay warm in the winter and cool off during the summer without spending an arm and a leg on energy bills, a mini-split heat pump system is a great option. In fact, many New Englanders have been making the switch every year to enjoy the benefits that come with using this type of system.

A mini-split heat pump differs from traditional electric resistance heating in that it works by transferring heat from one place to another, rather than creating it from scratch. This means that it uses far less energy (and therefore money) than other types of heating systems. What’s more, heat pumps can be used for both cooling and heating purposes: during the winter, they move warm air from outside into your home, while during the summer they move hot air out of your home and replace it with cooler air from outside.

When making decisions about heating your home, one of the most important considerations is how to maximize the efficiency of your system. Electric resistance heat may be cheaper up front, but ultimately, it is much more expensive in the long run due to its poor energy efficiency. On the other hand, a heat pump system is an excellent option for homeowners looking to save money and make their home more comfortable. Here are some of the benefits of using a heat pump system rather than electric resistance heat:

1. Lower Operating Costs – Mini-split heat pumps cost much less to operate than electric resistance heat. A mini-split system utilizes a low amount of electricity to circulate the refrigerant and transfer heat from outside air into the indoors, allowing it to warm up the inside of your home in an economical way. Since electric resistance heat is basically just burning electricity to generate heat, it is much less efficient than a mini-split system. The efficiency of mini-split systems results in lower utility bills since less energy is used overall.

2. Energy Efficiency – Heat pumps are incredibly efficient when it comes to either heating up or cooling down ambient air. Heat pumps do not rely on direct combustion or burning like electric resistances systems so they require much less fuel input while providing greater output. This means that your home will be heated faster and at higher temperatures compared to traditional methods, without having to use as much energy in doing so.

3. Improved Comfort Levels – Mini-splits are extraordinary at maintaining your ideal temperature. Rather than noisily sputtering on or off to drastically change the temperature, mini-splits quietly and reliably maintain the actual temperature you want your home to be. Plus, with a multi-zone heat pump system you can exercise precise temperature control room by room! Meaning all members of your household can have their perfect temperature, and you will no longer have to pay to heat rooms you don’t use!

4. Longer Lifespan – Finally, thanks to their robust build quality and ability to provide efficient conditioning all year round, heat pumps typically last much longer than electric resistance systems: which tend to deteriorate over time due to wear and tear issues resulting from constant switching off and on again. Therefore, in terms of cost savings alone (not taking into account other advantages), investing in a good quality heat pump system initially could prove more cost effective in the long run even if it requires more capital up front compared with an electric resistance heater. All of our mini-splits come with a 12-year manufacturer warranty, so you know your comfort is guaranteed for at least the next decade.

Overall, there are many reasons why it pays off (both economically and comfort wise) for homeowners to choose a professionally installed heat pump solution instead of opting for an electric resistance heater system. From lower operating costs through improved comfort levels right down to longer lifespan guarantees, heat pump systems provide reliable results each time while offering users better long term value – something that no other alternative can match up against!

Efficiently Heating Your Home – Pros and Cons of Heat Pumps vs Gas Furnaces

August 9, 2022 by Kai Haskins

Leaves are falling and so is the temperature outside. As homeowners prepare to settle in for the long Massachusetts winter, more and more are considering making the switch to an all-electric Ductless Heat Pump system.

WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF A HEAT PUMP VS A GAS FURNACE?

Heat Pump systems operate on electricity—and they are ideal for homes in moderate or extreme climates.

Ductless Heat Pumps:

  • Efficiency – Electric heat pumps are far more energy efficient compared to a gas furnaces.
  • Installation Costs – Heat pump systems usually cost less than the installation of a furnace because furnaces require an extensive ventilation system, which can increase the cost in a home not already outfitted for this need. The heat pumps we specialize in are ductless, so no need for extra construction work on your home!
  • Operating Costs – In most of America, electricity rates are lower than natural gas. Therefore a heat pump system will cost less to operate than a gas fired furnace.
  • Quietness – While furnaces do not always make a tremendous amount of noise, ductless heat pumps operate whisper quiet – so you’ll barely notice they’re there.
  • Safety – There is no risk of carbon monoxide poisoning while using a heat pump, and they run on electricity which is typically considered a safer source of heat.
  • Multi-Purpose: Ductless Heat Pumps work for both heating and cooling, so can eliminate the need for both a furnace, as well as window AC units in the summer.
  • Size – A heat pump system requires an inoor and outdoor component, while a gas fired furnace just has an indoor component. The two units of a ductless heat pump work in unison to read the temperature outside compared to inside and adjust according to the temperature you set on your thermostat (and we recommend a programmable one).

Gas fired furnaces have been used for decades to warm homes, and the technology is antiquated. The advantages and disadvantages of this type of home heating equipment include:

Gas Furnaces

  • Lifespan – A gas fired furnace is typically considered to have a slightly longer lifespan (avg 15 years) than a heat pump, although our heat pumps are backed by a 12 year manufacturer’s warranty.
  • Less maintenance – Since a gas operated furnace is only used for a few months out of each year, the maintenance requirements are less than those for a heat pump, but a heat pump provides all year-long use and is a fantastic option over a window AC for energy efficiency.
  • Safety – A gas leak could result in an explosion. Since heat pumps run on electricity, this is not a concern.
  • Cleanliness – The products of gas combustion can result in dirtier air and poor indoor air quality in the home.

With many years of experience in the heating and cooling service industry, we are proud to have helped thousands of homeowners achieve and maintain comfort with new heat pump heating system. Please call or email us at any time to see if an energy efficient heat pump fits your lifestyle.
