ToggleNot All Contractors are Equal
Not all HVAC contractors are created equal—and in Massachusetts, licensing matters more than you might think.
HVAC work in our state often involves multiple skilled trades: electrical, plumbing, gas fitting, refrigeration, and sheet metal.
That means your contractor needs more than just experience—they need the proper licenses to pull permits, meet code, and protect your investment. Without the right credentials, you could end up with a system that’s not up to code, doesn’t qualify for rebates, or worse, fails prematurely.
Here’s what to look for when hiring an HVAC company:
-
A Massachusetts Sheet Metal License for any ductwork fabrication or installation.
-
An EPA 608 Refrigeration Certification to legally handle refrigerants like R-410A, R-454B, or R-32.
-
A Plumbing License for work involving condensate drains, gas lines, or water heater tie-ins.
-
An Electrical License to safely wire equipment like heat pumps, central AC systems, and smart thermostats.
-
A valid Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) Registration for any residential job over $1,000.
- A Construction Supervisor License (CSL) is needed to supervise projects beyond minor repairs.
