Right in Endless Energy’s backyard, Wellesley, Massachusetts, is pioneering energy efficiency with substantial rebates for homeowners who install heat pump systems. These incentives help Wellesley homeowners lower their energy bills while contributing to a more sustainable environment.

Important Note: WMLP’s heat pump rebates will decrease effective July 1, 2025.

Why Choose a Heat Pump?

Heat pumps are eco-friendly HVAC systems that provide both heating and cooling by transferring heat between the indoors and outdoors. Compared to traditional HVAC systems, heat pumps offer superior energy efficiency, leading to significant cost savings and a reduced carbon footprint.

Wellesley’s Heat Pump Rebate Program

The Wellesley Municipal Light Plant (WMLP) provides attractive rebates for residents transitioning to heat pump systems:

For WMLP Customers Using Oil, Propane, or Electric Resistance Heating:

  • Whole-Home Heat Pump System Rebate: Homeowners who install a new heat pump system covering 90% to 120% of their home’s heating load and decommission their existing fossil fuel or electric resistance heating system can receive a WMLP heat pump rebate of $10,000. If the existing system is kept as a backup heat source, the rebate is $8,000.Important Note: These rebates will decrease to $8,000 and $6,500, respectively, effective July 1, 2025.
  • Partial Home Rebate: For systems providing less than 90% of the home’s heating load, rebates of $1,500 per outdoor condenser unit are available.

For Wellesley Customers Using Natural Gas Heating:

Homeowners with natural gas heating may be eligible for Mass Save Heat Pump Rebates:

  • Whole-Home Heat Pump System Rebate: In 2025, homeowners installing a heat pump system covering their entire heating load and removing or disconnecting their natural gas system can receive $3,000 per ton, up to $10,000.
  • Partial Home Rebate: Homeowners supplementing their existing heating system can receive $1,250 per ton in rebates.

How to Qualify for WMLP Rebates

To take advantage of these rebates, homeowners must meet the following criteria:

  1. Home Energy Assessment: Homes built before 2013 must complete a Home Energy Assessment (HEA) within the past three years. This assessment helps identify energy-saving opportunities and is required for rebate eligibility.
  2. Weatherization: Completing recommended weatherization measures, such as insulation and air sealing, within six months of heat pump installation can increase the weatherization rebate to 50% of the project cost, up to $2,500.
  3. Qualified Equipment: The installed heat pump system must be listed on the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP) Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pump (ccASHP) list.
  4. Permitting: Secure necessary permits from Wellesley’s Building Department. Final rebate approval is contingent on passing required inspections.
