Last week, during a meeting with our Endless Energy HVAC Account Managers about the upcoming refrigerant transition from R-410A to R-454B and R-32, I was asked how they should respond if a Massachusetts customer asks which refrigerant is better. My response: give them the facts and let the homeowner decide—which is exactly what I hope to accomplish with this blog.

ToggleWhat is the timelines for the A2l Refrigerant Change?
In New England, the shift to A2L refrigerants is happening sooner than many of us expected. Many distributors are already sold out of 410A models and are actively working with contractors like Endless Energy to move forward. As you may or may not know, this transition has created a bit of a “Beta vs. VHS” moment in the HVAC world, with some brands—like LG and Fujitsu—choosing R-32, and others—like Mitsubishi and Bosch—choosing R-454B.
Comparing R-32 and R-454B:
Both are better than 410A. R-32 and R-454B are more efficient (up to 12%) and have a significantly lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) than 410A.
R-454B has a slightly lower GWP than R-32. This makes it the more climate-friendly option in terms of carbon footprint.
R-32 is a single-component refrigerant. That means it consists of just one chemical compound, making it easier to handle during installation and servicing. R-454B is a blend of R-32 and R-1234yf, formulated to achieve lower GWP.
R-32 has been used longer and more widely. It was adopted in parts of Asia and Europe as early as 2012, giving it a strong track record of reliability and performance.
Both refrigerants fall under the A2L safety classification.
Systems using either refrigerant include built-in leak detection. These sensors will shut down the system if a leak is suspected, enhancing home safety.
Both R-32 and R-454B are considered safe for residential use.
Is one better than the other?
As we move into this new chapter of HVAC technology, it’s clear that both R-32 and R-454B offer meaningful improvements over 410A—whether you’re focused on energy efficiency, environmental impact, or safety. But there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to which refrigerant is “better.” Both are strong choices, and each offers unique advantages.
At Endless Energy, our goal is to help you make informed decisions by providing the facts and partnering with trusted manufacturers like Mitsubishi, LG, and Bosch. Whether your next system uses R-32 or R-454B, you can feel confident knowing you’re making a smart, future-ready choice—and that you’ve chosen a contractor you can trust to install it right.
