If you’re thinking about replacing your air conditioner or heat pump this summer in Massachusetts, you’ve probably already hit a wall: the unit you need is backordered, discontinued, or no longer qualifies for rebates. That’s because Summer 2025 isn’t just about high temperatures — it’s the middle of a major refrigerant transition that’s affecting HVAC systems across the country.

The phase-out of R-410A refrigerant — which has powered most residential AC and heat pump systems for the past two decades — is officially underway due to federal environmental regulations. While R-410A systems are still legal to repair, manufacturers are no longer producing new ones, and supply is drying up fast.

At the same time, the new generation of HVAC systems uses lower-GWP refrigerants like R-32 and R-454B. And while both are environmentally friendly and highly efficient, there’s a major difference homeowners need to know this summer:

R-32 systems are available now and so is R-32 refrigerant.

R-454B systems are available – but 454-B refrigerant? Not so much.

Nobody wants to have an AC put in that doesn’t work, right?

Why It’s Harder to Find the Right AC System in 2025

Many major HVAC manufacturers have started switching to R-454B refrigerant. The problem? Production delays, supply chain issues, and approval lags with rebate programs like Mass Save have made R-454B difficult to install. In fact R-454, which is manufactured by only two suppliers Chemours and Honeywell. Chemours is supposedly not taking any orders from distributors until September and Honeywell is not specifying delivery dates. When it does arrive, prices have shot up 4x what they were expected to be – which only gets passed on to homeowners.

We’ve talked to homeowners who went into contract with other Massachusetts HVAC companies for a 454B systems and due to refrigerant shortages are being told to expect an installation in August or September – kind of misses the point of summer AC!

If you need cooling now, waiting that long simply isn’t an option. And installing an outdated R-410A system (if you can even find one) means losing out on rebates and investing in a product that’s being phased out fast.

Why R-32 AC and Heat Pump Systems Are the Best Option in 2025

Here’s where R-32 refrigerant comes in. HVAC brands like LG, Daikin, and Goodman began rolling out R-32 heat pumps and air conditioners in 2024 and early 2025, and they’re ahead of the curve. These systems are already Mass Save-approved, in-stock, and designed to meet the EPA’s new refrigerant standards.

R-32 has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 675 — a 68% reduction compared to R-410A — and it offers up to 10% better energy efficiency. That means lower utility bills, fewer emissions, and a smoother path to future upgrades. R-32 is also a single-component refrigerant, which makes it easier for HVAC technicians to install, service, and recycle.

Most importantly? Most R32 ducted heat pump and ductless mini split systems qualify for up to $10,000 in Mass Save heat pump rebates, plus 0% financing through the Mass Save HEAT Loan.

Massachusetts Homeowners: Don’t Wait for Supply to Catch Up

At Endless Energy, we install a wide range of HVAC equipment, and we’re brand-agnostic. But this summer, R-32 is the clear winner for Massachusetts homeowners who want to upgrade their AC or heat pump system without getting stuck in the supply chain bottleneck. You want your AC next week, not in ten weeks when summer is done!

If you’re considering a mini split system, central AC replacement, or all-electric heat pump setup, we strong believe that R-32 models offer the best balance of availability, performance, and long-term value for summer 2025 AC replacements and new mini split and heat pump installations.

Next Steps: Avoid Delays and Maximize Your Rebates

Don’t get caught waiting for R-454B refrigerant to come in while your home heats up. Our team at Endless Energy can help you choose the right R-32 air conditioner or heat pump, set you up with a Mass Save Home Energy Assessment if needed, and get your installation scheduled quickly.
