Signs You Need Heat Pump Repair

Like any appliance, a heat pump can need repair at any time. Even a brand new unit can under perform if it has a faulty component. Knowing the warning signs will save you from costly breakdowns. Look and listen for these:

  • Reduced heating and cooling: If your home isn’t reaching the desired temperature or you have found cold and hot spots between rooms, it’s a sign your heat pump needs repairs.
  • Loud, strange noises: Heat pumps should run quietly. Grinding, squealing, rattling, or banging sounds typically indicate mechanical issues.
  • Short cycling: If your unit is turning off and on before completing a full cycle, it could have a thermostat, refrigerant, or compressor issue.
  • Higher energy bills: If your heating and cooling habits haven’t changed, but you noticed spiking energy bills, your unit isn’t running efficiently.
  • Musty or burning smells: Musty odors coming from your unit or vents suggest mold growth, and burning smells indicate electrical failures.
  • Ice buildup: During the winter, some frost on the outdoor unit is normal, but lots of buildup suggests a refrigerant leak or a problem with the defrost setting.

Common Heat Pump Issues

Refrigerant leaks

Refrigerant is the lifeblood of your heat pump. Corrosion and physical damage can cause dangerous leeks. Without proper refrigeration levels, the unit loses the ability to heat and cool properly.

Clogged air filters

A clogged air filter reduces air flow and will reduce the overall efficiency of the unit. Running the unit continuously with a clogged filter can also cause it to overheat.

Defrost issues

Heat pumps are designed to briefly melt any frost that accumulates on the outdoor coils. When the defrost control board, temperature sensor, or reversing valve fails, ice builds up to the point of failure. This is quite common during Massachusetts winters when the unit is working harder.

Electrical and capacitor problems

Capacitors help start the heat pump motor and keep it running. When they fail, the system may not start at all. Wiring faults, blown fuses, and tripped breakers can also prevent full operation.

Thermostat malfunctions

If the thermostat isn’t reading temperatures accurately or isn’t communicating properly with the heat pump, even a perfectly functional unit won’t perform correctly.

Our Heat Pump Repair Solutions

Endless Energy begins with a full diagnostic assessment of the heat pump. We have worked with thousands of heat pumps, and all different types, including air-source, ductless mini-split, dual fuel, and cold-climate heat pumps, so we can diagnose the issues quite quickly.

After we find the issue, we will tell you the reasons why it happened and replace any parts needed. We also check to see if the needed parts are covered by the warranty.  After the repairs, we recommend scheduling annual routine maintenance tune-ups to keep the unit running optimally.

Heat Pump Repair vs Replacement

Determining whether your heating system needs repair or complete replacement depends on such factors as age, efficiency, and repair frequency. Let’s dive into each below.

  • Age: A well-maintained heat pump should last 15 to 20 years.
  • Frequent breakdowns: Multiple breakdowns in a small number of years suggest the unit is on its last legs.
  • The 50% rule: If you are facing repairs on an older unit that equal up to 50% of a newer one, it is always more cost-effective to replace it.

Having a modern heat pump is also much more beneficial for our harsh winters. Some modern heat pumps, especially cold climate heat pumps, are designed to handle temperatures down to -15°F.

DIY Heat Pump Repair vs Professional

Attempting DIY heat pump repairs can often lead to more costly repairs later.

It makes sense that homeowners want to save money with DIY repairs, but heat pumps are complex systems that require a breadth of HVAC knowledge to properly repair.  While doing some DIY maintenance tasks, like replacing air filters and thermostat batteries, is fine, these repair instances require the professional touch.

  • Electrical work: There are high-voltage components that pose serious safety risks to untrained individuals. Capacitors, for example, can hold a dangerous electrical charge.
  • Refrigerant work: The Environmental Protection Agency states that only certified technicians are legally permitted to purchase, handle, and recharge refrigerant.
  • Warranties: To keep most warranties, the contracts state that repair work needs to be handled by licensed heat pump technicians.

Aaron came today to do our monthly maintenance for our mini split. He did the best job that we have had in a couple of years. You could really tell that he cared about making sure that everything worked and was clean. He cared about our system and making it look good despite its old age and took extra effort to clean the outdoors unit. It is the most clean it has been years due to that extra effort and I know it put a smile on my face to see it looking brighter and cleaner. He carefully explained his plan when he arrived and then proceed to explain each of his steps while he did them, what he was looking for with the tests, and discussed with us potentially future maintenance that we should be doing to get the most out of of the unit. He even showed us the app he was using to monitor so that we could monitor it with him. I personally enjoyed our conversation and was impressed with the level of his effort on our unit. He respected us and our house and made us feel included in what was going on in a way that really stood out from many of the contractors who have worked on this house.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs:

What should I do if my heat pump is blowing cold air in heat mode?

Your heat pump could be blowing cold air in the heat mode due to a refrigerant leak. It could also be a compressor issue or a faulty reverse valve, so it’s best to call Endless Energy.

Can I run my heat pump if it’s not working correctly?

While you technically can run a heat pump that is not working, we don’t recommend it. Running a heat pump with worn-down parts or some other issue can turn into a bigger and more costly repair.

Why does my heat pump run constantly?

If your heat pump is running constantly, it could point to a few issues. Dirty air filters block proper air flow, while thermostat issues could be giving the unit improper temperature readings.
