What is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump serves as a high-efficiency alternative to traditional furnaces and air conditioners, combining both heating and cooling in a single system. Instead of creating heat, it transfers it — resulting in superior energy efficiency and cost savings.

In warmer months, a heat pump functions like a central air conditioner, pulling heat from the air inside your home and releasing it outdoors through refrigerant lines. In colder weather, the process reverses — drawing heat from the outdoor air and moving it inside to warm your home. This technology provides year-round comfort without the need for separate systems.

Why Choose a Heat Pump in Somerville, MA?

Endless Energy is an Authorized Mass Save® Contractor Partner in Somerville

There are a wide variety of reasons to install a new heat pump as your primary source of in-home heating and cooling for your Somerville residence. These include:

  • Versatile comfort control: One system delivers efficient heating and cooling for every season.

  • Environmental benefits: By utilizing renewable energy sources, heat pumps help reduce carbon emissions and support a greener future.

  • Even temperature regulation: Maintain steady, comfortable indoor temperatures without the fluctuations common with older systems.

  • Dual fuel flexibility: Prefer to keep your gas or oil furnace? We offer hybrid heat pump options that integrate seamlessly with your existing setup.

  • High efficiency: Enjoy lower energy costs, as heat pumps can achieve as much as 200-400% efficiency, as compared to oil and gas furnaces that convert fuel to heat at 80-95%. Heat pumps also provide up to 4 times more heat output than baseboard heaters with the same amount of energy used.

Types of Heat Pumps We Install in Somerville, MA

Endless Energy installs a full range of systems to meet your home’s heating and cooling needs. Our experienced technicians design each solution based on your home’s structure, comfort goals, and efficiency priorities.

Air Source Heat Pumps

These are the most common systems for Massachusetts homeowners. Air source heat pumps efficiently transfer heat between indoor and outdoor air, consuming significantly less energy than traditional electric resistance heating. Cold-climate models continue to deliver strong performance even during frigid New England winters.

Ductless Mini-Splits

Ductless mini-split heat pumps provide zoned heating and cooling without the need for existing ductwork. Ideal for older homes, additions, or converted spaces, these systems allow you to control temperatures independently in each room and avoid energy losses through ducts.

Ducted Heat Pump Systems

For homes with existing ducts, ducted heat pumps provide whole-home comfort through your current air distribution system. They integrate with smart thermostats and zoning controls, offering precise temperature management and consistent comfort throughout your living space.

Dual Fuel Hybrid Systems

Hybrid configurations combine the efficiency of a heat pump with backup heating from a gas or oil system. This gives you the best of both worlds — energy-efficient performance during mild conditions and reliable heating when temperatures drop extremely low.

How Much Does It Cost To Install a New Heat Pump in Somerville?

Heat pump installation pricing depends on factors such as home size, system type, and installation complexity. Here’s a breakdown of typical ranges:

Ductless mini-split heat pump installation cost

Single-zone systems generally cost $6,800–$14,000, while multi-zone setups increase in price depending on the number of indoor units and total capacity.

Ducted heat pump installation cost

Whole-home ducted systems typically range from $16,000–$26,000, depending on efficiency ratings and whether ductwork modifications are needed.

Additional cost considerations

Electrical panel upgrades may add $2,500–$7,000, and ductwork improvements range from $2,000–$8,000. Permit fees usually fall between $40–$500, depending on municipal requirements.

Your guys were here yesterday to upgrade the insulation in my home. They did a great job, left the place cleaner than they found it, and even saved me some attic floor space that I expected to lose!

Our experience working with Endless Energy was excellent from start to finish. They just installed two heat pumps in a non-profit conservation building in Plymouth. Our sales rep, Nate M., was knowledgeable, thoughtful and really listened to our questions. He responded quickly to email and voice mail. Our building is older and had some quirky additions. I had confidence that Nate's recommended equipment would meet our needs.

The installation team, led by Ethan J., was outstanding. Ethan had to remove an old oil burner that was full of soot - a messy, messy job. They did an excellent job removing the old and installing two new heat pumps - one for a main building and a smaller one for the addition. What impressed me was Endless Energy's depth of staffing - we had 3 installers, 2 electricians, 3 managers (install, QC, & service) on-site reviewing the work in progress.

Because of the soot from the old burner, the techs left footprints on some of the carpet before they put down dropcloths. The install manager saw them and told me Endless would arrange for carpet cleaning. I even received a call from the COO saying she was aware of the soiled carpet and would have someone contact me to set up a cleaning.

When the job was done, QC manager Jeff T. spent over an hour walking us through the operation and maintenance for each heat pump, including tips on how to run them most efficiently. We are thrilled with the new systems. I would recommend Endless Energy to anyone interested in upgrading to a heat pump. They really have their act together.

Signs You Need a New Heat Pump vs. a Repair

Knowing when to repair or replace your heat pump depends on factors like age, condition, and repair frequency.

Repair may be the better option if:

  • Your system is less than 10 years old.

  • Only one part (like the fan motor) has failed.

  • Regular maintenance has been performed.

  • The repair cost is under half the price of a full replacement.

A full heat pump replacement might make more sense if:

  • The system is 15+ years old.

  • Breakdowns are frequent or expensive.

  • Utility bills are climbing without any change in usage.

  • Your system uses outdated R-22 refrigerant.

  • A major component (like the compressor) has failed.

FAQs: Somerville Heat Pump Installation

Do heat pumps still work in freezing temperatures?

Yes — today’s cold-climate heat pumps are built to perform efficiently even below 0°F, with reliable heating down to -15°F..

Can I rely solely on a heat pump for heating in Somerville?

Most homeowners can. With proper sizing and installation, modern heat pumps provide sufficient warmth year-round, though dual-fuel options remain available for added peace of mind.

Are heat pumps worth the investment with current energy costs?

Absolutely. Between lower utility bills and generous rebates, most Massachusetts homeowners recover their investment within 5–10 years through energy savings alone.

Should I make home or electrical upgrades before installation?

In some cases, yes. Air sealing and insulation improvements can boost efficiency, while older homes may require an electrical panel upgrade to accommodate the new system.

What’s the main difference between ductless and ducted systems?

Ductless installations are less invasive and ideal for zoned comfort, while ducted systems use existing ducts for even temperature control throughout the home.

How much can I expect to pay for electricity when heating with a heat pump?

Most households in Massachusetts spend between $150–$350 per month on heating with a heat pump during winter, depending on insulation and usage.

How much can I save annually by switching to a heat pump?

Typical yearly savings range from $1,200–$2,500 when replacing oil systems, $600–$1,500 compared to gas, and $800–$2,000 versus electric baseboards.
