What Does an Electrical Panel Do?

Your electrical panel receives power from your utility, divides it into individual circuits, and routes that power throughout your home. Each circuit is protected by a breaker that trips automatically if it detects an overload.

Most panels in Massachusetts homes are rated for either 100 amps or 200 amps, with older homes sometimes still running on 60-amp fuse boxes. A panel’s amperage rating determines how much electricity the home can use at once.

Our Electrical Panel Services

Endless Energy provides a full range of electrical services, from minor electrical panel repairs to complete system upgrades.

Electrical panel installation

For new construction, additions, or homes that have outgrown their existing infrastructure, we handle electrical panel installation from start to finish. That includes sizing the new panel, pulling necessary permits, and completing the work to code.

Electrical panel repair

Electrical panel repair may be the right answer when the panel is sound, but individual breakers have failed, connections have loosened, or minor damage has occurred.

Electrical panel updates

Sometimes a panel is functional but undersized or missing modern safety features. Electrical panel upgrades can add capacity, improve circuit organization, and bring an older system into compliance with current Massachusetts code.

Electrical panel replacement

When a panel has reached the end of its useful life, has known reliability issues, or simply can’t meet the demands of a modern household, electrical panel replacement is the right call.

Electrical Panel Upgrades for Heat Pumps & EV Chargers

A cold-climate heat pump system requires a dedicated 240-volt circuit. If you’re planning a heat pump upgrade, your electrical panel should be part of that conversation. Level 2 EV charger installation typically requires a dedicated 240-volt circuit, often ranging from 40 to 60 amps.

We regularly coordinate electrical panel upgrades with heat pump and EV charger installs, which often reduces overall cost.

Why Massachusetts Homeowners Upgrade to 200-Amp Service

For many modern Massachusetts homes, 200-amp service provides the capacity needed to support current needs and future expansion. A 100-amp panel was sufficient for homes from decades past, but it’s often inadequate for today’s households.

You also get more circuit slots, making it easier to add dedicated circuits for new appliances, workshop equipment, or whole-home backup power.

Signs Your Electrical Panel May Need Attention

Here are some of the most common indicators that your electrical panel may need a closer look.

Frequent breaker trips

A breaker that trips occasionally is doing its job. One that trips repeatedly on the same circuit is telling you that the circuit is overloaded for normal use or the breaker has weakened with age.

Flickering or dimming lights

Lights that dim when your HVAC kicks on or flicker when the dryer is running point toward insufficient capacity. Voltage fluctuations can also lead to premature equipment failure.

Burning smells or warm panels

A panel that feels warm to the touch or gives off a burning odor needs immediate attention. Heat buildup can indicate loose connections, overloaded wiring, or deteriorating components.

Limited electrical capacity

Many Massachusetts homeowners discover their panel’s limits when they try to add something new, whether it’s a hot tub or a second mini-split. If there’s no room in the panel, you’re likely a candidate for an upgrade.

Fuse boxes or outdated equipment

Fuse boxes are outdated compared to modern breaker boxes and often lack the capacity needed for today’s electrical demands.

Technicians have always been courteous and knowledgeable about the HVAC system. The most recent service technician, James, was fantastic. He was worked efficiently and offered thorough explanations of the work that needed to be performed.

I have, unfortunately, over the course of the last 3 years had to interact with Endless Energy representatives all too often, because the system they installed has had an array of issues. While the repairs and adjustments have been costly and the continuing issues with the dusting have been frustrating, I can say that I have no complaints about the individual service technicians who work for the company.

Our Electrical Panel Upgrade Process

We follow a consistent process on every electrical panel upgrade to minimize surprises.

Step one: Electrical inspection

Every project starts with an electrical inspection of your existing equipment. We assess your current amperage, available circuit capacity, the condition of your wiring and connections, and how your existing load stacks up against your panel’s rating.

Step two: Customized upgrade recommendations

A 100-year-old triple-decker in Worcester has different needs than a 1980s colonial in Natick. Based on the inspection findings and your plans for the home, we’ll clearly lay out your options.

Step three: Permit and code compliance

All panel work in Massachusetts requires permits and sign-off from your local electrical inspector. We handle the permit applications, schedule the inspection, and make sure the work meets local requirements.

Step four: Professional installation

Our licensed electricians perform all panel work in-house. We coordinate the utility disconnect and reconnect, complete the installation, and pass the electrical inspection.

Benefits of Upgrading Your Electrical Panel

The right electrical panel upgrade can improve your home’s safety, reliability, and value.

Improved safety

An upgraded panel with modern breakers offers significantly better protection against overloads, short circuits, and arc faults.

Reduced breaker problems

Circuits that tripped repeatedly on your old panel typically run without issue once the system has adequate capacity and fresh breakers.

Increased home value

In Massachusetts’s competitive real estate market, a modern 200-amp panel is a legitimate selling point.

Better energy efficiency

While electrical panel upgrades are primarily performed for safety, capacity, and reliability, they can also support energy-efficiency improvements that may qualify for Mass Save® rebates.

Support for modern technology

From smart home systems to induction ranges, modern technology increasingly demands dedicated circuits and reliable capacity.

Readiness for future upgrades

Having adequate electrical infrastructure already in place means you won’t face a second round of panel work when you want to add something new.

Electrical Panel Upgrade vs. Replacement

An electrical panel upgrade increases the amperage rating. A replacement involves swapping out the panel box and breakers while keeping the existing service amperage. If you’re already opening up the service to replace a failing panel, it frequently makes sense to upgrade the amperage at the same time.

Electrical Panel FAQs

Do I need a new electrical panel or just an upgrade?

If your panel is functional but undersized, an amperage upgrade may be the answer. If it’s outdated or damaged, full replacement is typically the better path.

How do I know if my electrical panel is unsafe?

Warning signs of an unsafe panel include a warm or discolored panel, burning odors, breakers that won’t hold, or visible corrosion. A professional electrical inspection can assess your panel’s condition.

Can you replace a panel without rewiring the whole house?

An electrical panel replacement addresses the service equipment at the main panel location. It doesn’t require touching branch circuit wiring, provided that the wiring is in acceptable condition.

Are electrical panel upgrades required for EV chargers?

A Level 2 EV charger typically requires a dedicated 240-volt circuit, often ranging from 40 to 60 amps. If your panel is already near capacity or lacks open slots, an upgrade is typically required before installation can proceed.
