Your ductless mini split is supposed to keep your home comfortable—not make it smell like a sweaty gym bag. But every now and then, we get calls like:

“It’s cooling fine, but it smells awful.”
“There’s this gross, musty smell every time it kicks on.”
“It kind of smells like something’s burning—should I be worried?”

Short answer? No, you’re not crazy—and yes, we can fix it.

But first, let’s walk through what’s probably going on, what those smells actually mean, and how to clear the air fast.

The Musty, Mildewy, “Wet Laundry” Smell

This is by far the most common one we see. Mini splits remove moisture from the air while they cool. That moisture collects on the indoor coil and drain pan. If it’s not draining right due to a clogged or pinched drain —or if the filters haven’t been cleaned in a while—that damp, humid space becomes a perfect home for mold or mildew.

It usually shows up:

  • When the unit first turns on

  • After heavy use in humid weather

  • In rooms with poor airflow

What to do:
Start by cleaning your filters. Then run the system in “fan only” mode for a few hours to help dry it out. If the smell lingers, give us a call—we clean coils and drain lines all the time and can usually get it fixed in one quick visit. If it still has an odor it may be time to consider a deep head cleaning.

The Sour or Rotten Smell (Yeah, That One)

If it smells like something died in your wall… it might not be far off.

We’ve seen the occasional mouse, bug, or some kind of organic debris get stuck inside a wall-mounted head—especially in basements or units near attic spaces. It doesn’t happen a lot, but when it does, you’ll definitely know.

What to do:

Turn the unit off and call us. We’ll safely inspect, clean, and disinfect it. We want to be sure to check for chewed wires that could lead to a more serious issue!

The Burnt or Electrical Smell (Shut It Down)

This one’s serious. If your unit smells like burnt plastic, wiring, or ozone, shut it off immediately at the breaker.

It could be a blown capacitor, an overheating circuit board, or a short somewhere in the wiring. You don’t want to wait on this one—ignoring it could damage the system or cause a safety issue.

What to do:
Turn your system off. Consider turning you breaker off or the outdoor disconnect to the unit off. Then give us a call. We’ll figure out what’s going on and get it resolved safely.

The Vinegar or “Dirty Sock” Smell

Believe it or not, there’s actually a name for this: dirty sock syndrome.

It’s caused by bacterial buildup on the indoor coil, especially in systems that haven’t been cleaned in a while or that switch from heating to cooling quickly (spring in Massachusetts, anyone?).

It’s gross. It’s common. And it’s fixable.

What to do:
Time for a deep cleaning. We’ll flush the coil, clean the drain line, and kick that smell to the curb.
