In recent years, Massachusetts has made significant strides toward a more sustainable, energy-efficient future. In 2024 as part of this effort and to follow a legislative mandate, Mass Save® phased out rebates for fossil fuel-based oil and gas heating systems to encourage homeowners to transition to cleaner, more energy-efficient options. The shift reflects the state’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and meeting its climate goals, including the goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.

By eliminating fossil fuel rebates, Mass Save® is promoting the adoption of electric heating and cooling solutions, such as heat pumps, which are not only more environmentally friendly but also more efficient in the long run. These systems are designed to provide both heating and cooling, and especially with new ENERGY STAR certified cold-climate heat pumps, they are ideal for Massachusetts’ varying climate.

Heating & Cooling Rebates Available in 2025

As of 2025, Mass Save® offers a range of rebates for energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, including:

  1. Cold-Climate Heat Pumps: Both ducted heat pump systems and ductless heat pump systems (also knowns as Mini Splits) may be eligible for up to $16,000 in rebates, making it a great option for year-round comfort in both cold and warm seasons. These systems can efficiently heat your home even when temperatures drop below freezing.

  2. Ground Source Heat Pumps: Also known as Geothermal systems, rebates for these systems may range up to $25,000 and can help offset installation costs.

Mass Save® also offers rebates for energy-efficient heat pump hot water heaters, insulation upgrades, appliances, and other home improvements designed to lower your energy consumption.

By taking advantage of these rebates, Massachusetts homeowners can enjoy a more energy-efficient home, lower utility bills, and contribute to a cleaner environment—without the fossil fuel reliance of older systems.
